Hypertension - Symptoms, Causes and Ayurveda Cure

Hypertension or High Blood Pressure (High BP) is one of the main causes of premature deaths around the globe. Blood pressure is high when pressure of blood in arteries is elevated above the normal pressure reading of systolic 120 over diastolic 80. When there is a disorder of arteries such as arteriosclerosis (hardening of arteries), they become unable to contain the amount of blood that is essential for normal functioning of the blood’s circulation throughout the body. It makes the heart to work overtime and pump with greater force to maintain the requisite amount of blood. It elevates the pressure of blood in arteries.  If remained untreated, hypertension causes a number of health disorders or conditions, such as strokes, heart attacks and kidney failures.

Symptoms of Hypertension:

The problem of hypertension does not come without a warning. Prior to the complete arrival of the disease, the body develops a number of symptoms that, if monitored closely, points to the potential problem.  Some of the main symptoms are as mentioned below:

  1. Pain in heart.
  2. Unexplained palpitations.
  3. Nervous tension.
  4. Excessive fatigue.
  5. Dizziness.
  6. Giddiness.
  7. Impairment of digestion.
  8. problem in breathing.
  9. Pain at the rear part of the head and neck on waking up, which in a little while fades away.

Causes of Hypertension:  While hypertension can be caused by many factors, such as bad eating habits and poor lifestyle; Ayurveda holds vitiation of vata responsible for hypertension. Apart from vitiation of vata in the body, following factors are also responsible for the disease of hypertension:

  1. Modern, stressful, hectic lifestyle.
  2. Smoking.
  3. Excessive intake of alcohol.
  4. Hardening of the arteries.
  5. Excessive weight or obesity.
  6. Disorders of metabolism.
  7. Excessive intake of salty, fried foods, such as junk foods.

Ayurveda says that those individuals whose body constitution is predominated by Pitta or Vata are more prone to hypertension or high blood pressure than others as even a slight vitiation in Pitta and Vata can cause the problem. But, vitiation of vata dosha mainly that of ‘Vyana vayu’ is the main cause of hypertension. Therefore Ayurveda focuses on treating the imbalances in doshas to bring blood pressure ranges to normal.
Ayurvedic Diet for Hypertension or High Blood Pressure:

Ayurveda suggest hat patients of hypertension should avoid animal products like meat, beef and eggs and follow vegetarian diet. Parsley, lemon, garlic and fruits like watermelon, grapes, Indian Gooseberry are quite helpful in fighting back hypertension. Animal products like skimmed milk, clarified butter can also be included in diet for hypertension.  Sodium and protein-rich foods should be avoided.

As caffeine-rich beverages like coffee boost the action of adrenaline and non-adrenaline that in turn increases levels of blood pressure, it is highly recommended to avoid such beverages.

Adopt Ayurvedic Lifestyle:

Ayurveda suggests that regular physical exercise should be made an integral part of life as it helps in improving the physical as well as mental strength and bringing lightness by depleting physical and mental stress and strain. Excess fats or obesity, which is one of the main causes of hypertension, can also be reduced through regular exercise. One the one hand, regular exercise helps in eliminating body fat and lowering total cholesterol; while on the other, it elevates level of HDL cholesterol that prevents fatty-cholesterol deposits in the body.

Ayurveda also suggest that one should adopt ethical elements. 'Achara Rasayana' says that avoiding hatred and nurturing love and affection calm the body and mind and significantly drag down blood pressure levels. Similarly, speaking truth and avoiding lying helps a lot in controlling blood pressure levels. It is because when you lie, you unknowingly build up tension and stress, which are enough to push your blood pressure levels up.

Meditation and Yoga poses like Corpse Pose foster complete peace of mind and bring blood pressure to normal.
