Low Blood Pressure - Causes, Symptoms, Home Remedies

A healthy adult’s normal blood pressure is generally taken to be 140 to 150 mm of mercury (systolic) and 80 mm (diastolic). Any variation from the normal gives birth to the problem. If the pressure of the blood at which it is pumped by the heart into the arteries and organs fall below the average 140 (systolic) and 80 (diastolic), the person suffers low BP.

  • Increase in pulse rate.
  • Cold sweats.
  • A feeling of extreme weakness and giddiness.

Causes: Low BP may be caused by a number of issues, including the following:
  • Acute/chronic anemia.
  • A big injury leading to loss of blood.
  • Food poisoning.

Home remedies:

Ayurveda believes that low BP is caused by an imbalance in three “doshas” viz. vata, pitta and kapha. More precisely, it is caused by a vitiation of vata or vayu. Thus, it can be treated by correcting the imbalance.

Giving the patient a cup of coffee or administering him/her 15-20ml of brandy diluted with warm water provides an instant but temporary relief from the condition. Beware, it is not permanent cure. As the condition may be triggered by various causes, one should pin point the exact cause and correct it with the help of an expert.

Diet and other regimen:

If low BP is caused by anemia, one should make sure that the patient gets balanced diet complete with all essential nutrients, including proteins and carbohydrates. Milk, cheese, dry fruits and seasonal fruits like mangoes, apples, bananas and grapes.

Those who take non-veg. diet can go for flesh of country chicken, pigeon, rabbit and goat. One can also take soups of meat from these birds/animals.

  • Avoid hard physical activity or exercise until the condition is cured.

If BP falls very slightly below the normal, it is a healthy sign because the heart will be able to cope with any emergency in case of stress. But if it falls below the minimum necessary, it should be taken seriously and a qualified doctor should be consulted as it can cause serious health problems.
