A Quick Look At French Tourist Katia's Abuduction And Rape Case

Former Punjab Chief Minister Beant Singh’s grandson Harkirat Singh died of a gunshot wound on Sunday, May 29. Police said that while the incident was still under investigation, preliminary investigations indicated that Harkirat Singh committed suicide by shooting himself. However, the victim’s wife argued that it was an “accidental fire,” which happened when her husband was cleaning his pistol.

While high profile leaders are busy in expressing grief over the suicide of former Punjab Chief Minister Beant Singh’s grandson, my conscience immediately dragged me back to the 1994, when the 'Sher-e-Punjab' earned another title -- 'Dhritrashtra' for not paying heed to the misdeeds of his own kin.
When high profile leaders like Prakash Singh Badal, Sukhbir Singh Badal and Bikram Singh Majithiya, state congress chairman Captain Amrinder Singh and others have expressed their profound grief over the shooting death of Harkirat Singh; let me remind our so-called leaders as well as the common man, who has become habitual to forget brutalities inflicted by the kin of politically-powerful and corruptly-influential people on the society.

One of the grandsons of Beant Singh was found involved in the abduction/kidnapping and rape/molestation of a French tourist named Katia. The alleged heinous crime was committed in Mohali near Chandigarh on the night of August 31, 1994.

The then 24-year-old French woman Katia told police that she was out in a hotel along with two Kenyan friends, who were students at a Chandigarh college, when a youth accompanied by 4 others approached them and offered drinks, but they refused.
Offended by Katia’s rejection, the youth some gunmen chased them in an official Gypsy right up to the students’ residence in Mohali. On the pretext of searching the house for drugs, they beat them up and abducted Katia at gun point.

Katia was taken to a factory building in Mohali, where she was raped. In the morning, the cuprits brought her to a hotel from where she managed to escape.

She reported the matter to police. Following investigations by journalists pointed the needle of suspicion towards Beant Singh’s grandson, Gurkirat Singh. Katia also identified him in a photograph.
The heinous crime boxed Beant Singh and his Congress government by a united Opposition, which demanded nothing less than a CBI investigation, booking of his guilty grandson and the chief minister's resignation.

But, the police continued to dilly-dally, and failed to produce Gurkirat Singh before Katia for identification. Before leaving Chandigarh in disgust on Sept. 6th, Katia said, “No serious effort has been made to book the real culprits. For me, it was a horrifying experience.”

Finally, with pressure mounting from the Union Home Ministry, the chief minister was left with no option but to make his grandson to turn himself in.

Beant Singh and the then state police chief K.P.S. Gill gave assurances that the culprits would be punished. Investigations conclusively established the involvement Gurkirat Singh in the rape case. Finally, Gurkirat Sing surrendered to police on Sept. 8th.

As if the crimes of Gurkirat Singh weren’t enough to blot the Sher-e-Punjab’s regime, his second grandson, named Amandeep Singh, become embroiled in a separate sexual harassment scandal. Such incidents are not rare, Moga girl molestation case in another cruel example of inhumanity.
While we can’t change the past, let me say we can surely prevent such incidents in the future by giving law a free hand to deal with offenders and culprits with an iron hand. A common man wants nothing more than a peaceful life with dignity.
