Who is Geeta Phogat?

Born 15th of December in 1988, Geeta Phogat is an Indian freestyle wrestler who won the country’s first ever gold medal in wrestling at the Commonwealth Games, held in 2010. She also became the first ever female wrestler in India to have qualified for the Olympic Summer Games.
Geeta Phogat comes from a Hindu Jat family of Balali village in the Bhiwani district of Haryana. Her father, Mahavir Singh Phogat, a former wrestler himself, served as a coach for her as well as her sister Babita Phogat.

Her cousin, Vinesh Phogat, also won a gold medal in Commonwealth Games. Both Babita and Vinesh won Gold medals in their respective categories in 2014 Commonwealth Games. Another younger sister of Geeta Phogat, Ritu Phogat, is also an international level wrestler. She won a gold medal in Commonwealth Wrestling Championship in 2016.

Geeta got married to wrestler Pawan Kumar of Delhi on 20th of November in 2016.
2009 Commonwealth Wrestling Championship: Geeta won the Gold medal at the Commonwealth Wrestling Championship held in Jalandhar, Punjab, in 2009.

2010 Commonwealth Games: She won India’s first ever gold medal in women’s wrestling at Commonwealth Games held in New Delhi by defeating Emily Bensted of Australia.

2012 Summer Olympics: She won a gold medal in the Wrestling FILA Asian Olympic Qualification Tournament held in Kazakhstan in April 2012.

She took training under the guidance of chief coach O.P. Yadav and foreign wrestling expert Ryan Dobo at the Netaji Subhas National Institute of Sports (NSNIS), which is situated in Patiala, Punjab.

A newly released movie “Dangal” has shown Mahavir Singh Phogat’s struggle to make her daughters world-level wrestlers. Produced by Siddharth Roy Kapoor and directed by Nitesh Tiwari, with Aamir Khan (Mahavir Singh Phogat) in the lead role; Dangal is really a good and inspiring movie.
