Constipation - Causes, Symptoms, Home Remedies

Constipation ( which known as Koshtabadhata in Ayurveda) is perhaps one of the most common disorders. Individuals leading an easy, sedate life in cities and consuming rich food or diet are more prone to suffer constipation than others.

Causes and Symptoms:

The main symptom of this disorder is the urge to void the stools but the inability to do so. If constipation continues for some time, it leads to a feeling of heaviness in the abdomen, and later causes problems like headaches, lethargy, loss of   appetite, and total apathy. The inability of the intestines to expel the waste matter leads to putrefaction and flatulence. Some studies have also proved links between back pain and constipation, and abdominal pain and constipation.

This disorder is also common among babies, and it is called baby constipation, which also has similar symptoms. Constipation continuing over a long period can lead to distension of the stomach in addition to severe discomfort.

Home Remedies:

In the absence of any organic obstruction, change of eating habits is the ideal way to cope with the disease of constipation rather than the use of expensive drugs of any sort. If constipation disorders are caused by the poor habit of consuming excessively spice, fatty foods and highly  refined cereals, the first step to deal with constipation is to advise the patient to take light foods, such skimmed milk, fruit, juices, and boiled vegetables, as well as totally abstain from fats and refined foods. Consumption of sufficient amount of liquids like water, milk, and juices reduces the dryness of the intestines and ease symptoms of constipation.
